That Boutique-y Rum Company focuses on bringing unusual and delicious rums on the market. Their small 50cl bottles and colourful labels can easily grab one’s attention, but the liquid inside is the real treat. The brand is part of Maverick Drinks and has the advantage of working with the charming Peter Holland, a “Writer, Presenter and Consultant to the Sugar Cane Spirits Industry” (yes, I did take it from his Facebook bio).
Since only a few special chosen people get to know this, I’ll keep the Secret <Worthy> Distillery #1 <Park> from Jamaica… well… secret. I’ll just say this: the estate started producing sugar in 1720 and was distilling rum in the 1740s, it stopped in 1960 due to an over supply of Jamaican rum after World War II, but it resumed production in 2005 – what a time to be alive.
The rum in my bottle is molasses based, pot still distilled and aged for 9 years in an ex-Bourbon cask – most likely some continental ageing too. Batch 1 has only 426 bottles. Bottled at 58% ABV (yumm-y) without colouring or additives, nothing but rum. I went through more than half a bottle in two days (I did share) and I’m still looking forward to nose this.
On the nose, oh, the sweet funk. Ripe bananas, butterscotch, pineapples, acetone honey, pear, Earl Grey, burnt vanilla, just out of the oven bread. I can go on, some apple pie and ginger too. It has such a tropical vibe I feel I should wear sunglasses while tasting it.
On the palate it’s like drinking a tutti frutti tea. An amalgam of ripe pineapples and bananas, raspberries, pears and red apples with a tea-y feel to it. The varnish flavour is here as well and I’m loving it. Freshly baked bread with a hint of smoke and some cocoa. The finish is long and tropical with some spicy ginger.
Simply delicious, can’t really go wrong when there’s a Boutique-y Rum Company & “Secret” Distillery Jamaica combo. Can be found on Master of Malt for £48, grab yourself one if you like Jamaican juice.
